How to Stay Active During the Winter| Surgery Center of Winter Park

At Surgery Center of Winter Park, we are committed to providing our patients with excellent healthcare through the latest in research, advanced technology, and overall tips to help them live healthier lifestyles.

As the winter season approaches, we wanted to offer some friendly tips on how to stay active during times when it may be a bit tougher to go out for longer periods of time.

Physical activity is essential for people of all ages to maintain their mental and physical health, as well as help with their overall balance and coordination.

With frequent exercise, bones become denser allowing you to improve your overall strength and prevent diseases such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is known as a loss of calcium in your bones causing them to become increasingly brittle and weak. Also, ensure your diet remains full of calcium-rich foods all year round but especially during these winter months!

Staying active does not have to mean going to workout classes at your gym or preferred workout facility – it can also look like online classes from the comfort of your own home.

There are tons of options offered for these classes ranging from

  • yoga

  • pilates

  • high-intensity interval training (HIIT)

  • strength conditioning.

Classes are made for a variety of levels from beginner to advanced and can be as long as 90 minutes or as quick as 10 mins! A few of our favorite platforms for online workouts include One Peleton, ALO Moves, and Orange Theory. These classes can be extremely motivating and make you feel like you are with the instructor face-to-face! The options are endless and it is important to find a workout that best suits your needs and overall health goals.

If weather permits, it is always great to head outside and get a nice walk-in. Make sure to bundle up and wear layers to prevent any sickness from the cold temperatures.

We also recommend picking up some fun winter hobbies such as skiing, sledding, ice skating, or snowboarding. Finding an indoor pool is another incredible way to stay in shape during winter.

Keep in mind – staying active does not necessarily mean planning a workout for the day. Staying active can also look like vacuuming the house, shoveling snow, cleaning out your garage, or even washing your car!

Exercising regularly will help you reduce the risk of experiencing bone loss and contribute to positive mental health. Don’t let the season rule your life by going into hibernation – create an active schedule that best aligns with your needs and wants!

If you suffer from any existing diseases or injuries, you should consult your physician before beginning a workout regimen as many factors must be considered prior to start a new routine.
